What are current trends in fences?

Currently, vinyl is the most preferred fence material being used when a homeowner is looking for privacy as there are many different styles and colors to choose from. When homeowners are looking to enclose a pool or beautify their yard without regard for privacy, ornamental aluminum is the number one choice.

Are eco-friendly fencing options available?

Chain-link, vinyl, and aluminum fences are all made from recycled materials. Even wood fences are being recycled into bark mulch now.

How do you deal with common fencing problems such as maintenance and digging dogs?

Most fencing today is maintenance free. Wash it off with a hose and it looks new again. Many people love the aged silver/grayish look of wood fence and therefore do nothing to it; others stain it every few years. If homeowners have a dog, we suggest grading, or adding a bottom rail to chain link fences, or framing under wood or vinyl fences to close gaps.

Any tips for integrating fences into a garden or landscape design?

Having installed many fences as part of large-scale backyard landscaping projects, we have had the opportunity to work with many designers and architects. We can build or install many types of fencing, and we love opportunities to get involved with custom-designed fences. The tip we tell customers is to let the fence enhance the beauty of your yard, not be the focal point of it.

What are current trends in fences?

There has been a steady migration to vinyl fencing over the past 10 years. The prices have gone down and the quality has improved. Customers like the maintenance-free aspects of vinyl and, with the design and color options available, there is a great selection to choose from. We even have vinyl with texturing impregnated into the fence to add to the authenticity.

Are eco-friendly fencing options available?

All of our wood fence is made from northern white cedar and obviously is environmentally friendly in the sense that it is an organic product that is installed in the ground without cement. We have made all our wood fence in-house for over 30 years.

How do you deal with common fencing problems such as maintenance and digging dogs?

As far as maintenance goes, it depends on the type of fence. Vinyl only requires pressure washing as needed (usually once a year). Wood fence requires no maintenance unless you stain it; then it will require ongoing maintenance based on the environmental conditions where it is installed (if it’s sunny or not, trees overhead, et cetera).

Any tips for integrating fences into a garden or landscape design?

We take each project on one at a time. Our product specialists provide free on-site consultations to work with our customers to achieve the look they are going after. No two installations are the same.

What are current trends in fences?

Security is king right now. In recent years, customers have become keenly aware of their expenses but still understand the value of security and privacy in their lives, whether it is for kids, pets, or a pool. Our newest venture, Granite State Gate Systems, deals solely with automated access control systems and is clearly the fastest growing division in our company right now.

Are eco-friendly fencing options available?

Our Regis brand powder-coated aluminum line uses a minimum 40 percent postindustrial content, has zero VOC emission during powder coating, and qualifies for LEED certification points. Couple that with zero maintenance and a lifetime warranty, and this is a very popular product. White cedar is also a regionally local, sustainable, and natural product for the traditionalist.

How do you deal with common fencing problems such as maintenance and digging dogs?

We do our absolute best to understand customer worries, wants, and needs prior to doing business. This includes providing them information and feedback about a given product’s advantages and possible limitations. Early communication is the key in avoiding problems later.

Any tips for integrating fences into a garden or landscape design?

In a landscape setting, the key is to consider the big picture. A very elaborate fence requires very elaborate landscapingor it can be overwhelming and look unfinished, while a more simplistic fence and proper landscaping can complement each other quite well. The two need to relate to each other.

What are current trends in fences?

Our customers tend to buck the current trend of shiny and light-duty vinyl fences for more natural wood fences with traditional designs. And with the advent of solid color stains, pre-stained white fences are very popular.

Are eco-friendly fencing options available?

Cedar fences are as eco-friendly as you can get! They are sustainable, third-party verified in growth, and after 20 years will slowly turn back to the soil and do it all over again.

How do you deal with common fencing problems such as maintenance and digging dogs?

A natural cedar fence will weather to silver gray within a year and age gracefully for the next 20 or so years without any maintenance. A more formal picket or privacy fence is often stained white or another color.

Any tips for integrating fences into a garden or landscape design?

Color and height are very important in laying out a fence. White fence is a good backdrop for plant material because your gaze stops at it; darker-colored fence will blend in more with the landscape. For decorative picket fences, always err on the side of a lower fence, about three feet high.

What are current trends in fences?

Low to no maintenance fencing—for example, a good quality vinyl should last a lifetime with low maintenance; a periodic washing will bring it back to life. It comes in all kinds of colors, including wood grain. Then there is aluminum fence with a wrought iron look, which is zero maintenance and blends in with the landscaping nicely.

Are eco-friendly fencing options available?

Any fence that doesn’t need to go to a landfill would be considered eco-friendly. Wood fences with stain or paint can’t be burned and need to go to landfills.

How do you deal with common fencing problems such as maintenance and digging dogs?

Digging dogs are easy to fix: dig a trench and bury some wire in the ground. For maintenance, you should do a yearly inspection. Pack any leaning posts level, adjust gates, replace rotten posts, clean mold with diluted bleach. New England weather takes a toll on fences, so if you make it a point to do a yearly inspection, you’ll be ahead of the game.

Any tips for integrating fences into a garden or landscape design?

A garden fence can be the same as a painter’s canvas. Your flowers will pop with the right background. Lattice works well in the garden; large square lattice, also known as English lattice, is great for climbing plants and flowers. Tighter lattice gives more privacy but still lets air circulate. Low picket fences are a perfect border if you’re going for the English garden look.
